Indicating after overtaking

Can anyone tell me...after overtaking on a dual carriageway or motorway, is it a requirement of the highway code to indicate left to return to the left-hand lane? I'm sure it never was when I took my test fifteen-odd years ago.

When training at all the levels that I did (from CBT to Advanced) my instructions to pupils were always the same - you should indicate to move back in after the overtake where doing so is of benefit to other road users. When overtaking in lane 2 and then moving back to lane 1 or where there is adequate clearance from other vehicles in lane 1 if moving back to lane 2 there is no need to indicate.

If you're reading the road properly it's not difficult to decide whether it's required or not. You do not need to indicate to the vehicle you have just overtaken your intention to move back in as road etiquette (sp?) dictates that you should do so anyway.
