I know I had to inform my insurance company when I got 3 points. They have since expired (well, it has been 3 years, I know I have to wait another year before I can physically get them off my licence unless I change address or something) - do I have to tell the insurance company?

When I have requested renewal quotes, points on my licence have been taken into account for insurance up to 5 years after issue, despite being expired in the eyes of the DVLA.
typically most insurers will keep records of convs upto 5 years old. After this period has passed they will no longer take the convictions into consideration when reviewing your premiums so there is no need to inform your insurers.
That's right, the law only punishes for 3 years, the insurers do it for 5! The contents of your actual licence are largely irrelevant, they will expire in the eyes of the IC after 5 years as stated above.

Thanks everyone - that is outrageous though! How can they take them into account 2 years after they have expired?! Blimmin' cheek if you ask me - oh well, another 2 years to go then!!! :-)
