Hard to answer this question without further information but if it is a dual carriageway to which the national speed limit applies, you will only get a national speed limit sign as you go onto the dual carriageway, i.e a circular sign, white background with a black band diagonally across, this would be a 70mph limit for a car or car derived van. It would be a lower speed for larger vans and other vehicles. If the dual carriageway is governed by a lower speed limit this would also be displayed as you went onto that road this again would be a cicular sign with a red border with the speed limit thereon i.e 50 or whatever. If this is the case there should be repeater signs every so often with the posted speed thereon these are a similiar sign but are smaller. Hope this helps.
all dual carriageways are legally 40mph unless stated.
Their is also legal requirements on the sizes of the signs and where they are situated
donm1901 is wrong. There are plenty of 30mph zones with dual carriageways where the speed limit would be 30mph by default. The speed limit doesn't change between single and dual carriageways unless there is a sign, apart from where the national speed limit applies. In that case the speed limit increases from 60mph to 70mph.(I am happy to be corrected on this, but this was certainly the case when I learnt to drive).
donn1901 dual carriageway 30mph unless stated other wise by signs stating 40 50 60 or national speed limit signs in this country 70mph
See the section on speed limits for more info which confirms dustypuss' and my earlier post -
