trailer towing
2 Answers
We run our own small business, and recently brought a plant trailer (twin axle) with a plated max. weight of 2600 kgs. (1300 kgs each axle). We have two vehicles which can pull it but we are unsure what the maximum weight is for each vehicle.
Vehicle no 1 is a nissan cabstar diesel 1998 gvw 3400 kgs and no more information.
Vehicle no 2 is a peugeot expert H1 L2 2008 the handbook says max. braked trailer weight is1968 kgs but with load transfer this figure can be increased, but I'm not sure what this means and the handbook does not elaborate also the log book says very little.
The thing is I need to tow at the max. weight (2600 kgs) and I dont know if either vehicle is capable and I'm now finding myself wishing I hadn't brought the damn thing. I've tried ringing the dealers but they dont know anything about towing etc. etc.
Please can anyone help ?????????

However, have you thought about legal technicalities? The Cabstar is under 3.5T, so you can drive it on a car licence, but don't forget you must have a B+E to drive with a trailer on. The combination will be over 3.5T, therefore a tachograph must be fitted and I think you must hold an Operators Licence (as you are working for hire and reward). If the braked trailer weight for the Expert is 1968, I think it will struggle with 2600kg (and could well be illegal). As a guide on the Cabstar, it is usually recommended that a trailer should be no more than 80% of the towing vehile weight and you are almost on the limit for that. You may need to buy a more suitable towing vehicle.
