I've just thought, if you are working 'for hire and reward' ie commercial, you will require an Operators Licence from VOSA if the combination is over 3500kg GVW

My car weighs..2300kg the unladen weight of the trailor is 500kg...the gross weight of the trailor is 2500kg..it is sometimes used for my business...so do I need a tachograph and an operators licence.Have contacted police and VOSA and got conflicting answers.
I think you need both, but although I've been an owner/operator for 15 years, I get caught out by the overly complex rules, so I'm not sure! Go with the advice from VOSA. They are the experts. The Police in my experience are out of their depth as they have to 'know' the legislation for loads of other things; not just transport.
No, the requirement to fit a tacho applies to the vehicle being over 3500kg, the trailer is not taken into consideration.
However, please ensure that your licence entitles you to tow a trailer of that capacity.
