Why don't they pass a requirement that hazard lights should be a long flash, short flash, long flash, short flash...

... then if you can see just one light - you know it's signalling a hazard and not an intent to turn

The purpose of Hazard lights is in its description P- Lactophobe, If as many you are on a Motorway & up ahead of you, you see a HGV with his/her Hazards coming on, there is something happening ahead he / she can see but you cannot.

Agreed that is a good use, but oh so often they are used by the driver to indicate that the vehicle is a hazard because it's parked where it shouldn't be parked, so put my hazards on and leave the vehicle to do whatever.

All that aside, how about using long + short + long + short flash sequence to indicate a hazard - do this on new vehicles, not enforced retro fits
I agree. I often see a vehicle in a line of parked cars, indicating to pull out. When I get near and have slowed, I then get the full view and find out the hazards are on.

It's often a white van, because they seem to use them all the time.
You must be joking, As in the previous question, most drivers don't know how traffic lights work, how are they going to learn about long flash, short flash hazard lights when they can't use their indicators properly in normal driving ETC? LOL
Some kind of agreed pattern sounds an excellent idea to me.

Oh and yes, it is annoying that some seem to think hazard warning lights are there to allow them to be a hazard.

Actually it was a stupid question really!

Have you noticed most drivers brake and signal at the same time (if they do signal) - so if it's a flashing amber signal and the brake lights aren't on and the vehicle isn't actually moving ... chances are it's a hazard warning.
Hi P-Lactophobe, I would go as far as to say it was a stupid Q. There are a lot stupid drivers out there as we see daily ( Including HGV & I was one of them) I regards myself as a Experienced driver not this so-called money making cr@p government Professional title they call drivers today, Professional people do not get treated like the way HGV drivers get treated but that is another story, It does not matter how angry we get with other peoples driving habits you will never ever stop it, the way I used to handle it & many of the other experienced HGV drivers as well, Smile as you go under " I will let you think about that.

I would agree with the OP – that it would be a good idea, for the reasons stated.

I’m not sure if it is a legal requirement to have hazard indicators on vehicles. If it is, it would only be applicable after a certain registration date (for sure my first car never had hazards). Is their operation part of the MOT test? If not, then I reckon a manufacturer could adopt this idea and hopefully it would catch on.

maybe it would be a good idea to have purple lights as hazard lights then the drivers behind the vehicle could think "oh what pretty lights they are" and slow down to a crawl and rubber neck like they do when they see the lights of a police car thats stopped someone on the road
