'Buy In Haste, Repent At Leisure'

15:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Motorists who are too hasty when buying a second-hand vehicle could find a car insurance claim ends up being the least of their problems, it has been suggested.

Auto information group HPI urged people to take their time and do their research when purchasing a used model. It explained that in their haste to make sure a great bargain does not get away, people could end up signing on the dotted line for a dangerous vehicle.

The company said cut 'n' shut cars pose a particularly serious risk and they are not always as easy to spot as buyers may think. An HPI director advised people in the market for second-hand vehicles to ensure a history check and independent inspection are carried out.

"This will help identify whether the car is twice the car a buyer may think it is," he stated.

If a car has been stolen, cloned or has outstanding finance then it is possible you may lose the car and the money you paid for it.

People who pick up a second-hand model at a bargain price may want to consider whether third party insurance is a more cost-effective option than a comprehensive policy.
