Cash-Strapped Motorists Advised To Go Green

Motor insurance customers keen to cut their motoring costs are being advised to go green. According to the Department for Transport (DfT), opting for a more environmentally-friendly model will reduce the amount motorists spend at the pump.

In a bid to encourage drivers to improve their green credentials, DfT's ACT on CO2 website is offering a service which allows car buyers to compare carbon dioxide emissions and running costs of a variety of current models.
Matching buyers with cars will help to boost the market in the run up to new car registrations: showing that it is possible to save money and reduce CO2 emissions when buying a new car. At a difficult time for the economy this will give a much needed boost to both drivers and the motor industry.

The transport minister said: "By using the ACT ON CO2 search tool, buyers can choose the most fuel efficient cars and see the savings on the screen in front of them."

Government figures suggest drivers could save up to three months' worth of fuel every year by opting for the right vehicle.

•    Top Small Family – Toyota Prius.
•    Top Family – Toyota Prius.
•    Top Estate – Volvo V50.
•    Top MPV – Volkswagon New Golf Plus.
•    Top Compact Exec – BMW 3 series.
•    Top Executive – Volvo S80.
•    Top Coupe – BMW 1 series.
•    Top Open Top – Audi A3 Cabriolet.
•    Top Hot Hatch – Audi A3 Cabriolet.
•    Top Compact 4x4 – Nissan Qashqai.
•    Top Large 4x4 – Lexus RX450.
•    Top Luxury – BMW 7series.

Notably out of all 14 categories listed above 10 were diesel cars, two were petrol/hybrid and two were petrol.
