A leading car producer has commented that making sure air conditioning systems are regularly cleaned and used throughout the year can avoid a "nasty surprise" when switching them on in the summer.
The manufacturer's outlets provide a service which gets rid of odours and cleans out contamination that has built up in the system. Not performing maintenance such as this can have pungent consequences, the firm says. Indications of a contaminated unit can include an unpleasant odour and subtle symptoms similar to those of the common cold or hay fever.
"When unused over the winter months the air conditioning units can become contaminated which can cause an unpleasant smell when switched back on," it advises.
The company offers an approved solution that disinfects and cleans the entire air conditioning system, rather than just deodorising, to eliminate the contamination that causes the smell and gets right to the root of the issue. As the treatment is water-based, non-toxic, non-irritating and non-flammable it ensures that the vehicle is completely dry and ready for the customer to drive away immediately without the need to ventilate as is often needed with other treatments.
Along with this, the company has offered general advice to its drivers, including using the system to reduce the risk of falling asleep at the wheel, dehumidifying the vehicle in cold and wet weather and using the technology throughout the year. Use the car’s air conditioning regularly to keep the system lubricated.
Automotive air conditioning works in a similar way to a refrigerator. A refrigerant gas is compressed and as it does so it gets hot. Cool air from outside then passes over the pipes and the refrigerant turns into a liquid. This hot liquid is then sprayed through a very small aperture where it expands and turns back into a gas this action removes heat from the surroundings which is the hot air in the interior of the car. Then this gas is then compressed again and the process repeats itself.
