Drivers' Nightmares Revealed

15:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Most of the factors most feared by UK drivers are preventable with a little care, reveals a new survey.

Brake failure, falling asleep at the wheel, carjacking and tyre blowouts were found to cause the most anxiety among drivers, the study by a leading tyre manufacturer revealed.

But along with the common sense step of adequate motor insurance, a few basic steps and precautions can minimise the risks of driver's nightmare scenarios catching up with them.

"Three of the four most fear-inducing driving factors are preventable," said a representative of the company.

"To help drive safely you must first make your car safe to drive. Request brake checks when replacing your tyres and consider fitting tyres which allow you to retain control in the event of a blow out."

The fear of tyres going at speed has lead to the increasing popularity of safety tyres among European drivers, which stay inflated for up to 50 miles after a puncture is blown. Motor insurance companies have also started to recommend the technology. This could mean lower premiums if you take the time to fit these special tyres.

Falling asleep at the wheel can easily be prevented by taking regular breaks on long journeys. Also turning down the heating and up the music can help.
