Drivers Urged To Protect The Identity Of Their Vehicles

15:36 Mon 24th May 2010 |

Motor insurance customers have been advised there are steps they can take to reduce their chances of having their vehicle identities stolen.

Police are urging drivers to fix their number plates in place with special security screws. Officers announced a number of sessions are scheduled to carry out this work. Anyone interested has been advised to check their force's neighbourhood policing team website.

A police spokesman said stolen number plates are used to disguise the identity of a vehicle, which can then be used in a variety of crimes - from driving off without paying for petrol to armed robberies.

In addition to using special security screws, he suggested there were other simple crime prevention measures that can reduce a motorist's chances of being targeted.

He stated: "Practical steps that can also be taken include parking your car in a garage overnight rather than on a driveway and installing security lighting on your property."

Never leave your car unlocked even for a short time. Install a vehicle tracking device, this increases the chance of the car being recovered if it is stolen. Get the windows etched with the VIN.
