Future Of Monza In Doubt

The future of Italy's historic Monza race circuit has been thrown into jeopardy after a judge ruled that racing there produces too much noise.

The court said that any motor sports events held there in the future must make sure that it conforms to sound emission limits far below the volume produced by Formula One vehicles.

The court suggested that the only way it would allow racing to return was by ensuring all vehicles were fitted with silencers.

A local Judge upheld a longstanding complaint of the residents of the nearby town of Biassono, who said that the wailing of motor engines made their lives hell during races.

A court order banned all motor sports from Monza which involved "the use of vehicles not fitted with an appropriate silencing system". The complaint was made by three families who live within 500 metres of the track.

The Judge’s impartiality has come into doubt, following reports in the Italian La Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper quoting the judge as saying motor racing was a "superfluous, dangerous and socially useless activity that had a major impact on the environment".
