IAM Questions Fleet Safety

The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has issued some alarming statistics about the safety of fleet vehicles on the UK roads.

The information was gathered through the IAM's 'Drive and Survive' training course, a safety program for business drivers enabling companies to cut their motor insurance costs. The company’s driver risk management programme provides a range of services, from e-products to hands-on training, tailored to individual fleet requirements.

Fleet drivers who take the course are required to use the cars that they use for work to sit the tests.

Of the vehicles which turned up for the test, however, all of which had motor insurance, 16 per cent were turned away for having at least one tyre beneath the legal tread limit.

Another five per cent were stopped for faulty lights, two per cent for unsafe brakes and a truly scary two per cent who did not have a valid licence at all.

Three sessions were halted because the driver arrived under the influence of drink or drugs and two because a driver was falling asleep at the wheel. Not statistics to give the motor insurance industry much comfort.
