Motor Insurance Policies More Expensive For Older Women
Motor insurance companies are traditionally keen on young, female drivers. They are traditionally less keen on young male drivers however, a fact reflected in policy prices. Altogether sensible, you would say – young female drivers are both less likely to drive pocket rocket hatchbacks, and less likely to leave their cars upside down in a hedge.
Recent research by a well known newspaper has discovered that of the motor insurance companies it approached polices for a 40 year old driving a five year old ‘sensible’ car was likely to be, on average, about £35 more expensive for a female driver than for a man.
A motor insurance spokeswoman admitted that the statistics did show that women are more likely to claim on their motor insurance as they grow older, but said she did not believe they began to drive less carefully or crash more often.
"One reason may be that women tend to have the second car in a family and if you have children it is probably the age group when they start learning to drive and they will go on the mother's insurance," she suggested.
"The other is that women may be driving more at this age. Women do still tend to be younger than their husbands, and perhaps if the man has retired they are finding they have to do more driving."
