New Cars 'Should Be Equipped With Tyre Pressure Gauges'

Including tyre pressure gauges with all new cars could result in a drop in motor insurance claims in the UK, it has been suggested. According to a motoring assistance firm, under-inflated or defective tyres significantly contribute to the number of deaths of driver's traffic collisions.

The chief executive explained: "People are very neglectful about checking their tyres - and that is reflected in more than one million MOT failures in 2007/08 as a result of tyre defects."

He stated by including digital tyre pressure readers in the tool kits of all new cars, it may be possible to save lives. He also warned that the facilities on fuel station forecourts were not always accurate and could give motorists a false sense of security.

The company is supporting the work of campaigning organisation TyreSafe that argues tyres play a fundamental role in the performance and safe handling of a car.

TyreSafe recently conducted a survey that found that nearly half of motorists asked admitted to not checking their tyre pressure in the last month, the maximum period recommended by safety organisations.

Incorrectly inflated tyres can cause uneven wear, fuel inefficiency and in extreme cases blow outs.
