One In Five Drivers Admits To Lacking Insurance

A fifth of all UK road users own up to having driven without adequate motor insurance, a survey has revealed.

An extraordinary three per cent of drivers confessed that they regularly took the road without car insurance cover, and a further 14.3 per cent said they did "occasionally."

Figures gathered by the Association of British Insurers (ABI) have suggested that around five per cent of vehicles on UK roads were being driven without motor insurance. The latest findings quadruple those figures.

"It is a worrying and unacceptably high figure. We have one of the worst records for uninsured drivers in Europe," said an ABI spokesman. He added "Uninsured drivers cost the industry £500 million a year, which equates to £30 a year on to every premium for law-abiding drivers."

Police have promised to come down hard on those they catch driving without motor insurance, under new powers that grant them the right to seize and crush uninsured vehicles.

"Uninsured drivers are a real danger. If they are in a collision, the innocent driver can often be left without compensation. In the event that someone is killed, the situation is even worse," said a police spokesman.
