Police Prepared To Seize And Destroy Unlicensed Mini Bikes

Mini motorbikes found on highways or on public land without the correct licence, taxation and motorbike insurance will be seized and destroyed, police have warned.

Sales of the baby motor bikes, only around two feet high but styled to look like super bikes and capable of up to 35mph have taken off recently.

But police have warned that they are considered road-going vehicles and if they are ridden off private land will be subject to the same rules of the road as everyone else, including motorbike insurance requirements.

The police are concerned that many parents who may be considering them as Christmas presents will think that they are just toys.

Several machines have already been destroyed by having their engine crank drilled through and their frames sliced in half as a warning to others to ensure they obtain motor bike insurance and documentation.

"Many youngsters are riding these machines illegally and in totally unsuitable and inappropriate areas," a police spokesman superintendent commented.

"I'm sure no responsible parent would hand their child the keys to an unroadworthy car or motorcycle and send them out in the street to play with it."

Under new powers police have the authority to seize and destroy any vehicle without the correct motor insurance or that they deem to be a public nuisance.
