Drivers on UK roads are afflicted so badly by road rage that they have begun taking it out on their vehicles, says motor insurance research.
A third say that they regularly punch their steering wheel to release some stress. More than ten per cent admitted getting out to give their wheels a kicking.
A cup of camomile tea may be more recommended by motor insurance companies, with ten per cent of motorists ending up hurting themselves after whacking their motors.
Two per cent admitted becoming so enraged that they grabbed an inanimate object and thrashed their blameless vehicles after they had broken down.
As many as eighty per cent said that they got aggressive behind the wheel, with ten per cent saying that it happened on a daily basis.
"We repair a quarter of a million cars a year and are seeing more and more with damage inflicted by frustrated owners," said a motor insurance company spokesman.
"Getting stressed and aggressive not only has a detrimental effect on your driving, it also has the potential to cause accidents."
Other motorists' behaviour was the reason most often given to motor insurance researchers as a reason for drivers beating their cars. Traffic jams, roadworks and busy roads also all contributed to vehicle abuse.
