Sat-Nav 'Distracts Drivers'

Almost one in five users of satellite navigation find them a distraction while driving, according to new research.

Figures from a well known insurance firm also found that more than a third of drivers did not trust sat-nav systems to take them the right way, while many deliberately took the wrong route to catch the system out.

This is despite sat-nav systems being one of the most popular targets for car thieves, which has contributed to higher costs and insurance premiums.
Whilst it is true that most accidents are caused by inattention, the idea that sat-nav devices are on balance more likely to increase accidents rather than decrease them is a worrying development.

However, one in five sat-nav users said that they found having the system comforting while on the road, even if they already knew the way.
According to a similar survey, one driver in 50 said sat-nav had either caused or nearly caused an accident. Sat-nav systems have also been held responsible for drivers suddenly swerving or turning.

As well as directing people to their destination, sat-navs were also found to be used to help drivers avoid speed cameras and accident black spots.
However, research is unlikely to reveal the benefits of sat-nav systems. How a driver who is lost without a sat-nav and looking for directions is distracted. How a sat-nav can show the road ahead on a dark or foggy night which helps a driver plan for an upcoming junction or bend in the road. Currently, some 14 million out of the UK's 32 million qualified drivers have a sat-nav system fitted in their car.
