Who buys CDs?
12 Answers
I don't get how now it's so easy to download tracks / entire albums for free, shops are still retailing cd's for like ten quid up... I think that's a lot to pay for packaging, so now I don't buy cd's at all anymore. Who does?
And just to anticipate - yeah I know I'm not giving record companies their revenue, but u know what I can live with that!

I think if a cd costs 9 which would include all the pressing, printing & distribution costs then a download should be available much cheaper as no printing, pressing and distribution is involved.

I quite agree with the sentiments about record companies and the likes of 50 cent but what about the vast majority of artists who aren't raking in millions?
My taste in music tends to exclude most chart music as I find it too commercial and I buy most of my music on cd. If possible direct from the bands themselves, either at live shows or via their websites.

I'm old-skool, I'm afraid. If it's a band I really like, I look forward to having the disc in my hands, listening to it and flicking through the inlay card (although not singing along to the lyrics using the card, my copy of Different Class told me never to do that). I like seeing it in my CD collection, and when I'm looking for a CD to put on, I like going through them all, and being reminded of all the people and places and times in my life which they remind me of or represent. Sad, I know, but once all my music is on a pc, it just won't be the same. You can tell a lot about someone by their CD collection.
The record companies only have themselves to blame. When CDs first came on the scene, they charged about 40% more than for cassettes. When challenged they said it was because of production costs (and the OFT upheld their claim) which we all now know to to be complete rubbish because we can all buy and burn CDs for peanuts. If they had played fair, this situation would never have come about.
I still buy CD's and I would still buy vinyl if I had the room to store it. When I buy something I like to see it and be able to hold it (if you see what I mean!). You don't get that from downloading and you don't get the sense of owning it.
The music I buy is underground music published by independant labels who depend on all the income they can get so I'm more than happy to pay the prices.

Artists actually only get a small fraction of CD sales so you can only imagine how much the record companies, distributors, and retailers make.
My tastes in music are well away from the pop culture and often CD's are the only way to get the music I enjoy the most. I still feel that stealing is wrong, but not waiting for the right price on a CD I'd like to add to my collection. Never pay full price for anything if you can avoid it!
Many of the artists I enjoy don't have pressings of a jillion units to spread out production costs, so I end up paying their prices with the satisfaction that a higher percent is going in their pockets since I'm buying directly from them.

Mostly music lover still refer CD and it is also being used professionally in many fields, so we cannot deny its importance and it is being purchased, duplicated or replicated.
