Need Help On Ripping My DVD's!!!!!!

What I want to do is to take my DVD's and back them up on my external hard drive so I can take it anywhere and watch them on any computer. What I need to know is what is the best quality to 1:1 video format i should use no matter how big the size of the file is because Hard Drive space is not a problem. I dont want to convert it to a format that needs to be played in any specific Movie Player just a format that all you have to do is click and play without the need to download anything.
