markrae - shame on you! I've been a fan of Fish for years

My all time fave song is Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac. The line "Lightening strikes, maybe once maybe twice" takes me back to the first time I heard the song- during a tropical thunderstorm when I was living abroad.
Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace.
I'm far too tired to fall asleep
"I've been high, I've climbed so high but life sometimes it washes over me"
but then Michael Stipe is a brilliant lyricist :D

and "I'd rather hurt you honestly than mislead you with a lie" (Dan Hill)

Thanks for your input.

I have to concede to MR that Fish lyrics can occasionally become too convoluted for their own good but no-one can accuse him of 'lyric writing by numbers'. Also, I do not actually consider Marillion-Fish as 'rock' music.
Not 'rock' music? What would you call it, then?

And I should point out that I really didn't enjoy writing that, because I really hate classification of music. There are only two types of music: music you like, and music you don't like.
I like the line "the dogs say goodnight" from 'What a Wonderful World'

(at least that's what it sounds like to me)
For MR

I agree about classification. If I was forced I would probably say that Van Halen, WASP. Saxon, Molly Hatchet, Motorhead etc are 'Rock'. For me Fleetwood Mac, Marillion-Fish etc did not move far enough away from the blues to be included.

If I might paraphrase Oscar W

"There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book. Books are well written, or badly written."

I feel the same about music.
Wow! Fugazi as a blues song...???

Nope, can't see that one!!!
Problems of classification! Neither one thing nor another and not particularly liked by me. Also not very keen on the entire 'Kayleigh' album. Horse for courses.
what we need is a great big melting pot
big eneugh to take the world and all its got
keep it stirring for a hundred years or more
turn out coffee coloured people by the score(i think thats the right words, its by blue mink)
You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave. Hotel California, Eagles.
That's a great line, rayzor.

I love the lyrics to summer highland falls.
Shoot shoot shoot and kill the natives,
You're one of us and we love you for that.

Think of honour, Queen and country,
You're a blessed son of the British Empire,
God's on our side and so is Washington.

Come out on the hills with the little boy soldiers.

Come on outside - I'll sing you a lullaby,
Or tell a tale of how goodness prevailed.

We ruled the world - we killed and robbed,
The Fluffing lot - but we don't feel bad.

It was done beneath the flag of democracy,
My love she speaks like silence
Without ideals of violence
she doesn't have to say she's faithful
But she's true like ice like fire

Love Minus Zero--No Limits
Bob Dylan
"I'd beg for your forgiveness, but begging's not my business" - Squeeze, Up The Junction
-- answer removed --
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free
"Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that you've been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows you've been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows "
Excellent, JTH. First we take Manhattan...
