I heard a song a long time ago with a woman singing (operatically rather than a pop song) with her music changing into birdsong very effectively. Does anyone know the piece?

Because you say 'operatic' rather than pop, it could be the Peruvian songstress Yma Sumac, famed for her 5-octave range. There's one song on her 1953 album Inca Taqui (I think it's called Chuncho ('the forest creatures') ), where she does a bird imitation.
