Hi all,

I have just about got over the tremelo arm being called a whammy bar, (what a stupid name) and now they are talking about " shredding" what is this? I can "strum" as Bert weedon would say, and I can "bend" the strings, but " shred" I think not. The Who used to " smash" but not " shred". is this going to make my playing better, or just a immick??? God help us old rockers!

Here tou go -

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shred_guitar

I have just returned from interviewing Orianthi Panagaris, who was the guitarist of choice for Michael Jackson's tragically curtailed 'This Is It' tour.

Ori and I discussed shredding at some length, and then I saw her demonstrate her considerable skill in this technique as she currently plays guitar with Alice Cooper's touring band.

Here is an example of the lovely musician at work -

The number of notes that the shredder can play per second is inversely proportional to the actual existence of a tune.

Shredding is impressive if you're impressed by speed over technique. Style, though, goes down the pan...

A different link - the first is faulty.

I see shredding like I see drum solos - some muisicians can do it well, others make an over-long racket out of it.

Personally, I could watch Orianthi shred all day - and with the volum off!!!
I shouldn't worry about it, Oldie ............ it's been around forever. They've just given it a name. Richie Blackmore and Alvin Lee etc etc were doing much the same in the 60s.
A fair point well made Builder!

Got it! play a load of notes in any order as fast as poss and keep in a set chord sequence so no chance of a bum note. could they play it the same twice?
watched the video, good sound, but no feeling, just," look how fast I can play".
now I know. thanks.
Here's someone I could watch forever, Oldie. With Jeff Beck and Vinnie Colaiuta ............ Bass, but with harmony, feel, technique etc etc :o)

Well ............. what's up?
Try again

Sorry ................. give up :o(

Love jeff beck, he turns up in other groups stage shows ( on you tube), and steals the show. the yard birds, good down to earth music, and Jimmy page, no one ever like him. i lived near the Zepplins manager, Peter Grant, and the Zepllin boys would drink in the pub across the road from the manor that the manager owned. no one ever took any notice of them, least of all me, they were just some guys who sat in the corner quietly drinking. I used to chat to them, but as I wasn't into heavy metal stuff I didn't take much interest. strange world.
