Can these discs be played on an ordinary cd player please?

no.

special players are needed.

Just to qualify the above answer, hybrid SACD discs can be played in a standard cd player, but you get none of the benefits of SACD.

A normal SACD can only be played in a dedicated player.

You can buy some sony dvd players with have the facility to play the sacd discs.

Quite affordably too :)
