In reality taking timings out for food and waiting about for everyone to arrive you will probably be actually playing for 3 hours which will probably be 45-50 songs.
I would ask the 21 year old and 40 year old for say three off their fave songs which are a must play and then go from there.
From experience it's the cheesey stuff that people want, to give you a rough idea google Jock in a Box/Mastermix and you'll get an idea of the songs that are on their cd's.
I also hope you have a decent set up and some half decent lights! ;-)

If you are 40 you were born in 1972 so the time you get into music is when you are in your early teens which equals 1985.
From having DJ'd hundreds of times I have never been asked to do a 90's night - 50's, 60's, 70's & 80's yes but never 90's. In fact the bulk of the 90's stuff I played was Old School Club Classics

There are a few guaranteed songs that won't 'scare the horses'. I suggest you invest in the following:
1. Dancing Queen - Abba
2. Relight My Fire - Take That featuring Lulu
3. Crazy In Love - Beyonce
4. Paparazzi - Lady Gaga
5. Single Ladies - Beyonce
6. Umbrella - Rihanna
7. Brown Eyed Girl - Van Morrison
8. Hey Ya - Outkast
9. I Want You Back - The Jackson Five
10. Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
11. Holiday - Madonna
12. Bad Romance - Lady Gaga
13. Y.M.C.A. - Village People (only put this on when people are VERY drunk)
14. Night Fever - Bee Gees
15. Summer Nights - John Travolta / Olivia Newton John (again - wait 'til people are drunk)
16. Hot In Herre - Nellie
17. Sex On Fire - The Killers
18. Viva La Vida - Coldplay
19. It's Raining Men - The Weather Girls
20. Groove Is In The Heart - Deee-lite
I would suggest starting off the evening with a load of background stuff that people would like to listen to, then crank it up with some more modern dancey stuff (Rihanna, Lady Gaga etc) and then hit them with the cheesey stuff (the 'drunk dancing dad' music).

have a think about the 'classic' songs that get played at student nights.. the likes of Girls & Boys by Blur, Sit Down by James, Place Your Hands by Reef, throw in a few cheesy 80's tracks the 21 year olds may think they know and some modern stuff. At my cousin's 40th recently they had a live band playing all kinds from Paul Weller to Vampire Weekend, they were ace!

any 'perennial' track thats good to dance to will get most people up.
I'm amazed that youngsters seem to know alot of the tunes of the 70s/80s/90s - probably more than a 40 year will know the latest chart hits. Probably because alot of the 'classics' were made then, and alot get re-released/rehashed.
SP1814 has suggested tunes that are likely to go down well with all ages from at least 3 decades.
