Which decade?

Just wanting to know if im the only person who loved all the stuff back in the 80's. I loved the 90's too but eveyone always tells me that those decades were nothing compared to the 70's. Well i wasnt born till the 80's but obviously ive heard loads of stuff from the 70's since but i still love 'my decades'! Remember Bros, New Kids on the Block, Tiffany, The Bangles etc?

Agree with Obonio on those three but I would class NKOTB as mor 90s as they broke into the uk charts late in 89 if I remember and continued til about 92. Also Charles & Eddie as mentioned above had their only real hit in 1992 (would I lie to you).

 

However the 80's were still pretty good. Duran Duran, Dire Straits (70s-80s), The Police, U2 (when they were really good), Michael Jackson was class at the time.

Better than all the run of the mill boy bands, girl bands, cheesy solo artists who don't write their own music and manufactured cr*p fed to us from the early 90s to present day!

Nostalgia's a wonderful thing. To be honest I think there's probably always been some great music, some not so great and some downright awful. As time goes by a lot is forgotten and only that which stands the test of time, whether for quality or for cheesiness is remembered. In the mid 90s I was a big Brit Pop fan and there were some great bands emerging then - blur and oasis being the most obvious, but some were pretty poor. Anyone remember menswear even a decade on?

MsBehave - I'm sure if you actually sat down to listen to a full day of typical radio from the 80s you'd find plenty to dislike...

During the 80's record companies tended to steer away from the more 'gritty' and 'political' music from the late 60's / 70's, realising that there was more money to be made from the teenage market. Hence the spawn of manufactured throwaway bubblegum music, created by choosing fresh faced youngsters with no discernable talent, but highly marketable to the teen audience.
As OBonio puts it, the bands you have named are prime examples of this manufactured pop. Put it this way, could you listen to Tiffany's 'I think were alone now', and honestly say it's a deeply moving powerful piece of music, well written with an excellent musical score and full of hidden meanings which keep listeners guessing for many years as to what the artist was relating to?

80's music seems to be extremely popular nowadays and speaking for someone whos lived thru it i have to wonder why ! sure there was some good stuff but 80% of it was rubbish(especially the late 80's)

i never stagnate with my music listening.i always move forward.why listen to old stuff when there are dozens of really good acts around now ?

The 80s were brill!! The music was so diverse you had bands like The Jam, Madness, Specials and all the Ska and Mod bands then BIG bands like U2 (still fab), Def Leppard, Status Quo, Eagles, Dire Strates, Genesis and then you  had something for the girlies Duran Duran, Spandau Ballett, Haircut 100 and for the boys Blondie, Madonna, Lisa Stansfield  and then the "indies" Japan, Cure, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions, The Smiths.  God I could go and on!!!  God I wish I was young again!!!

I'm a mobile DJ and I can confirm that 80's music is extremely popular. Wham - Wake me up before you go go for example, is not the sort of thing most people would listen to in the living room at home, but after a few drinks it's good time singalong music that makes people happy. The same with Amarillo, it's been a long time since any modern tunes have spent that long at No1, because there's very little cheesy feel good music in the charts these days, Just R&B and Hip Hop which doesn't produce the same effect.

Just as i thought...The 80's are like Marmite, you either love it or hate it. :O)

Well i loved it but thats because i have lots of really great memories from my youth. I relate all these great songs to great times.

With reagards to Mattk's comment, 'why listen to old stuff when there are dozens of really good acts around now', im not sure i agree. Well i agree to a point but surely if everyone thought this, this would that mean nobody would bother listening to The Beatles, Queen, Pink Floyd, Areosmith, etc etc nowadays? I dunno, just thinking out loud.

Makes interesting reading though.
