The demise of the top 40.

I am in my 30s and, as a music lover, would hate to think i'm over the hill, but...please tell me i am not alone in thinking that the majority of Top 40 comprises of utter shoite?

I agree. There are only a few songs I like these days, by few artists. I detest rap, which just seems to be the norm now.

I'm in my late 0's and think there is loads of good tunes in the top 40.

I think it's always been the same. You only tend to remember the good stuff though, and it's also only the good stuff that still gets played today, so you think it was all good.
But when you watch some of those old Top of the Pops it's amazing how much crap there always has been in the charts.

There's loads of good music about these days. It's just not necessarily in the top 40.

Being mid 50s, i find a lot of the top 40 not to my taste but what I do hear are old backing tracks being sampled or songs being given a faster beat and re-recorded by modern day 'artistes'

I find that a lot of rap artists steal songs from other people and just talk over the track/

the new bug bear for me is the continual use of autotune on every song, there is no originality, the "good" songs are few and far between.

Youngsters still listen to music a lot and are knowledgeable about current stuff, just as my generation did in the early 1970s. I don't think much has changed. I like some stuff but most of it isn't to my taste- which is just as my parents/grandparents thought about 60s/70s music.
I think music is more disposable now though- people download loads of tracks onto their phones and replace them regularly whereas we had physical albums which we kept for years. I do wonder though whether many of today's chart hits will still be remembered in 40-50 years in the same way as we remember stuff from 40 years ago

I think your tastes changes as you get older. Even though I'm the wrong side of 40 theres still alot of tunes that make the top 40 that I like.

As factor say, alot of kids seem to know all the words to tunes from the 80s/90s - lol maybe even they prefer our music! Either that or they know it from cover versions!

I don't care... I find stuff by accident when browsing... or might see a concert on tv and decide to buy an album....

I hate pop and have always hated pop so whether it's Cher Lloyd or The Beatles it's not to my taste. I like indie and rock and anything a little bit different so you'll find me listening to everyone from Leonard Cohen to Eminem to Kings of Leon or Gotye. For me it's type of music not era so I'm fairly happy with the top 40 minus the horrible pop crud that I've always hated.

Sort of agree. I'm now on the dark side of 40 and just don't "get" a lot of modern music anymore, and quite rightly, I guess that's the way it should be. Music, especially chart stuff (to me) has always been a young thing, not meant for old farts lke me.

That being said, occasionally, a new one comes along and completely bowls me over. Heard this the other day and adore it.

I listened to it on a long journey home recently. I kept listening in the hope it would get better as it got closer to the top 10.

It didn't.

I had a quick listen B00. I think it's a grower. But it's certainly better than some of the tripe around it in the charts. And it seems to be one of the few songs Rihanna hasn't managed to muscle in on :)

There are quite a lot of songs that I like but probably not many that would stand the test of time and still enjoy ten years down the line
