Fusion

I am seriously fortunate to be attending the Montreal Jazz Festival this week - working for the magazines for whom I write.

Last night, I saw the Wayne Shorter Quartet, a sold out show at around seventy pounds a ticket - I went because I interviewed his bass player earlier in the day, and I am due to interview his drummer, so I wanted to see them in action.

I have to admit I didnt understand any of it!`

Fusion always reminds me of Jazz Club on the Fast Show, and I know they are taking the mick, but it sounds the same to me!

Can anyone explain the appeal of Fusion to me - I feel it is an area of which I am ignorant, and I want to adjust that feeling.

I can't explain it, just been browsing on youtube. Its like a language and I can only catch a word here and there
Not fusion....I guess pretty much mainstream now but I love these guys

Just had a look at some Wayne Shorter on youtube. I'd summarise it as four people improvising four different tunes at the same time in the same key.

Not my cup of tea, but if you like that sort of thing you have to say ....nice.

Mattk - don`t knock it!

It`s nearly 90 degrees here, and the word `jazz`is used very loosely indeed - James Taylor opened the Festival, Van Der Graaf Generator and Tangerine Dream are playing here, as is Kelly Joe Phelps, Seal, and Liza Minelli is closing. It`s a chance to see and experience bands I would not get to see at home.

By the time I get home I wil have seen a combination of shows that, had I paid for them here, would have cost me over a thousand pounds in ticket prices, so yes, I am seriously lucky!!!
