what good reggae artists would you recommend?

Bob Marley is a given, also Sly & Robbie, Peter Tosh, early Aswad, Black Uhuru, Burning Spear, maybe UB40 (pre Labour of Love), Toots & The Maytals... that's all I can think of for now.

Other than those already stated by delboy3, you could have listen to ; LKJ, Bunny Wailer, Eek-a-mouse, Gregory Isaacs, Lee Scratch Perry, Luck Dube, MIghty Diamonds, Ini Kamoze, Skatalites, Steel Pulse, Dr. Alimantado, Dennis Brown, U-Roy, I-Roy....There's lots and lots of Reggae Samplers out there, start with those and see what you like. There are many strands of reggae, from Ska, Lovers' Rock, Roots, Toasters, Dance Hall, Dub etc.

Depends what you're looking for really but pesonally I would say Barrington Levy, Jah Cure, Luciano, John Holt, Sizzlah, Bounty Killah, Peter Tosh, Capleton, Elephant Man for funkiness.

I'm loving Jah Cure at the moment, if you can then down load the following tracks that I have in my stereo at the mo (oldies but goodies) and if you like them then you'll love the others:
