Eamonn Andrews had a minor hit with Shifting, Whispering Sands in 1956.

All manner of musicians have graduated to 6 Music - Guy Garvey from Elbow, Cerys Matthews, Jarvis Cocker et al
Ray Moore ex Radio 2 had a hit with ' O My Father Had A Rabbit ', Tony Blackburn had two, 'So Much Love' and ' It's Only Love ', the other aforementioned Laurie Lingo, Brown Sauce, Kenny Everett and Terry Wogan are all hit making DJ's, Jimmy Young is the only chart topper with ' Man From Laramie ' and ' Unchained Melody ' but he was a singer turned DJ as were a lot of the others mentioned. Pete Murray never had a hit, neither did Alan Freeman or Savile, but all 3 released singles in the 1960s.
October 71 Rod Stewart had a number one with 'Maggie May.' When they performed it on TOTP John Peel played the mandolin. Does that count? (it was Ray Jackson on the record)
