It really was him.He also wrote 'Smile' which was recorded most famously by Nat 'King' Cole.

Charlie Chaplin didn't just act, he was an all-round auteur, who also wrote, directed and even composed the scores for almost all of his films, including A Countess In Hong Kong (his final film) from which "This Is My Song" comes.
