Shenandoah, Virginia
1864
Bill had buried brother John
and gone back to war
Regiment of Diexies
threatening the town
and before he left did day
he wrote down a message

Got to write this letter
though I know your heart will burn
should have turned out better
but I know I will not return
Got to write this letter
got to tell you: Please do not cry,
Soldiers must die, mom
Soldiers must die, mom
Soldiers must die, I do not know why.
All the drums were calling
for the load-attack
many blues were on the run
yankees driven back
Bill what is in the front line
knowing what to do
did not feel the bullets hail
and his words came true
Got to write this letter
though I know your heart will burn
shouldhave turned out better
but I know I will not return
Got to write this letter
got to tell you: Please do not cry,
Soldiers must die, mom
Soldiers must die, mom
Soldiers must die, I do not know why.
