How do you organise your CDs, elpees and wax cylinders?

Are 'The Beatles' filed under B, T or The?
Is 'Bob Dylan' stored under B or D?
Should film soundtracks be kept under film title or artist?

Need help - am having an indecisive OCD day!

LPs go with LPs. CDs go with CDs. Tapes go with tapes. Voila !
I would always ignore the word 'The' (apart from The The) so it'd be Beatles for me. For single artists I'd use the surname (Dylan)

Is 'Lady Gargle' L or G?
'The' is always ignored in alpha listings

My CDs and Vinyl are sorted by Surname

But when I started downloading I spent hours in itunes changing them all e.g. from David Bowie to Bowie, David

until one day I realised I was being really anal-retentive and needed to get a life

Now sort I them all by first name which works just as well as there is no real benefit in having Richard Thompson next to Teddy or Jeff Buckley next to Tim
The Fab Four as Beatles, The. Dylan filed under Bob. Soundtracks as the name of the Film.

What happens if you can't decide whether a band name has the definitive article - 'Rolling Stones' or 'The Rolling Stones'?

For movies, what happens if you're more interested in the composer? 'Hans Zimmer' or 'Gladiator'?

Must get out more.
I keep mine in the order I bought them, like to be different.
we sort ours by genre - there is a large section on Meat Loaf :-)
We ignore the 'The' and go alphabetical. However we have run out of space and we now have eight 'organised' piles in the c.d player cabinet. Grrrrrr.
To be honest - ours isn't organised at all. "Played most recently" has a pile of its own.
Must get out more, Plowter? Must read my post above yours a bit more...

The Fab Four as Beatles, The.

Oops! Sorry Stephen. Missed your post.
I meant I must get out more, hence the question.

Currently shuffling my CDs into order.
Keep finding those pesky little pixie teeth.
Id file beatles under B Bin
You could always use the phone book as a guide (the way it its alphabetised) as to the correct way to file things i.e. ignore the "the", treat Mac, and Mc as MAC, File by Surname, and sub sort them into genres of music, soundtracks under the film title!
BTW Alice Cooper is the name of the band so should be filed under A, and there are several anomalies like that.
i'm having the same problem, I think it's best to put the christian name in
