Squier Fat Strat

Hi all,

Hubby got a guitar, but after comparing it with other squier strats, we find this is thicker in the body, and feels much heavier, and, to hubbie's despair, does not sound much like a strat. it has the three normal pickups, not humbuckers( whatever they are). He wants to know " what is this guitar all about?" is it a squier version of a fat strat, which means its thinner than a proper fat strat, if you know what he means,

"What is this guitar all about" is a difficult question to answer really.

If he wants it to sound like a start he should be using single coil pickups (like the one's fitted probably) humbuckers are twin coil and mainly seen on Les Paul and SG type guitars from Gibson, Epiphone etc

The squire strat is a cheeper version of the Fender Stratocaster.

...none of which fits the description you've given.

Or, do you have any reasons to believe that this item was "pre-owned" i.e. that somebody's whipped out the original humbuckers, for their own purposes, shoved in some $10 imitation pickups and sold it on?

Also, near the foot of the wiki page, a section called "Squier Stratocaster" says (my emphasis)

"A standard Squier Stratocaster is mass-produced in factories located in Indonesia or China. For its construction, Squier usually uses ___woods readily available in those countries, such as agathis and basswood___. They also use stamped metal hardware and multiple pieces of wood in construction to reduce waste and to lower costs. In some cases, the body is laminated, much like a plywood, rather than consisting of two or three solid pieces glued together."

The thickness of the body, the type of wood, whether it is one solid piece or several glued together all has a bearing on the tonal quality of the instrument. If you want it to sound like a real Strat, then buy a real Strat.

what Strat sound is he comparing it to
i have had over a dozen Strats through the years and they all sound different, the two I currently have sound miles apart.

I have seen people do blind tests with Strats and based on sound only, have not been able to tell differmnt models aprt, ie cheaper from more expensive.

Plug it into a half decent amp, add a bit of eq and it will sound as good as any other strat.

Record it on a PC with something like guitar rig or amplitube and it will sound like any Strat he wants it to sound like

Thank you all, its just that we are wondering why its thicker and more solid than the squier bullet or affinity, but the pickups are just three single coil normal strat type. We have another cheapo squier, and its sounding like hank is playing, yet this one is more mellow and no bounce. they both have new ghs boomer strings.

The Fat in 'Fat Strat' refers to the pickup configuration, not the body.

It means that there's a humbucker (double coil) in there as opposed to the 3 single coils you get on a standard strat.

A Squier is a cheaper version of a Fender, and it won't have the same build quality or playability, but it's perfectly reasonable guitar for the casual player.
