My uncle was a sniper in the First World War.
A very gentle soul who was the first to help any neighbour or colleague with a problem. Quiet and unassuming. He never mentioned the war but I once overheard him talking to my father who had served in the Second World War. He said that as the best shot in his unit he was ordered to do this and truly believed that he was doing to protect his mates.

The distances are phenomenal
The side story that one sniper managed to shoot his 'oppo' ( the one trying to er shoot him ) through the sniper sight is true ( Vietnam )
and I think it is the final scene in a film catchily named Sniper
During WW2 the use of sniper scopes was not quite cricket
( and I think a sniper was at risk of being summarily shot if he were found with one ) Jude Law and Bob Hoskins star in a film 'Hollywood goes to Stalingrad ' That concerns a Russian sniper called Zaitsev I think.
Big thing in Germany during the Russian campaign. 1941-2.
My father had a lot of time to read the German accounts - [ by then he was an interpreter in a POW camp ] but for a long time went un-noticed

I salute this Marine's skill and fortitude.
He will however have to go some way before he's in the same class as this guy:
