'Superstar' DJ's?
What is the crack with giving these dance DJ's like FatBoy Useless a title like 'superstar' when all they are doing is playing someone elses music and being all clever by smearing one song into another at the end/beginning of the track?
Must be the Emperor's new clothes syndrome methinks?

Spend an evening watching someone like Judge Jules or Paul Okenfold building the atmosphere of a night, reacting to what the crowd like, and taking the mood up and up with their choice of music, mixed seamlessly, until the whole place is just heaving. Then go to your local club and watch the wanabe trying, and failing to do the same. then you'll know why these guys earn so much, and so m any people travel to see, and hear them work their magic.
A big thing is being made of mixing the music seamlessly. Like it is so important that a one second gap between songs will reduce your pleasure of the moment. Also that they mix the beats/rhythm so that one song to the next has the same rhythm...err...they all have the same bloody beat to it. Also the choice of songs....hardly likely to put a sinatra song in a dance set are they.
If you did not know it was the superstar DJ then you would not have paid the gate money and you would not have known any different. Paid to change records....ha ha what a life
Couldnt agree with you more Puttycake. It is very easy for people to slate something that they neither understand or have never tried to do. Mixing is an artform there is no doubt to that , it is bloody hard to do just in your bedroom let alone in a dark , smokey , noisy place like a club. The Dj's have to try to find the tunes that will work and try to fnd unique / rare songs this can and does take time. They then have to take their tunes and try to build / fit them into their particular sets and build this into some sort of order so they will build the crowd up and down when they choose. Although the Genres of music the Dj may play in his set can be the same eg House , Trance etc the BPM's of the tunes are not and it is pretty ignorant to think that all House records have the same BPM (or speed) yes they may have the same beat but that does not mean the same speed which is why Decks and Cd players that are used have pitch control on them so that the speed of one record can be matched to that of the one that you wish to mix the Record/Cd into.
Also DJ's play many different tunes and some of the more outhere or experimental DJ's can and do drop all sorts of werid and wonderful tunes in their sets depending on how the crowds are reacting and i am sure that Mr Sinatra's tunes will have been used many times.
Sorry to have rattled on but it does irritate me when people assume that it is so easy to pop a tune on and mix in the next one and everyone will dance away merrily. This is not so.
