Is it because classical performers are becoming better known?

Or is the classical market simply relying on the "boy band factor"* ... that you are more likely to buy a CD if it has someone sexy on the cover?

( *also known as the Katherine Jenkins factor)

My recent purchases (not because of the covers, I should add) include ...

Jonas Kaufmann ...

(one feels that one would, wouldn't one)

And Hélène Grimaud ...

I'm sure classical CD's used to have pictures of crappy old paintings, or rustic scenes with fields and rivers (sorry, you probably know what rustic involves). I'll be describing "mountainous" next.

True JJ, the only exception in my classical LP'S is Elizabeth Schwartzkopf who naturally had photographs of herself on all the covers. The rest have paintings, rural scenes and pictures of the opera or the conductor. Helene Grimaud can hardly be described as mountainous....

No, you're right.

She's quite slim and elegant.

I saw her in concert last Saturday.
yup, used to be either rustic scenery, classic art, or blurry photos of orchestras. I wonder who started it?

Is that Ali B, shoota?
Question Author
Ah yes, I was forgetting the blurry orchestra photos.
I suppose the stud muffin factor applies to coloraturas as well as punks.

Er, no, she's French.
I've lost the title - it's Alison Balsom.

I didn't know that. What excellent trivia. Best Answer for that little snippet.
I ask for a genuine reason, and it's just a tad of the OP, but what is your most memorable, i.e. the one that you can conjure up in your mind's eye, album cover. Mine is Pink Floyd's 'Animals' (with the pig and power station).
