KC and the Sunshine Band had a hit with it...one of their last.
Question Author

sorry to press the topic, (and thanks for the quick response) but at the moment i've got the entire psyche unit (staff + patients) debating the topic:

did anyone else famously do the song?

AND who did it first?

cheers!

KC & The Sunshine Band did it first - it was writen by Harry (K.C.) Casey - and a second version was a hit for KWS a few years ago unless ...

you are thinking of the same title, but a different song, sung by Donald Peers, which reached Number 3 in 1968. Hope this helps.

and just to confuse things yazoo had a hit with Dont Go

and aerosmith had a song called.."baby, please dont go"

awesomeness!..thats what it reminded me of when i saw the words please dont go

I doubt if its the one, but the 'Animals' did 'Baby please don't go, down to New Orleans, know I love you so, Baby please don't go'.  from the sixties.

Being an oldie, afraid i've not heard of any others.

and Blondie had an album track called Just Go Away

I think it was on plastic letters or parrallel lines

I'm not saying Chessman's wrong, as The Animals may have done a version of it, but the hit version of the song he mentions was by Them, a sixties band from Northern Ireland featuring a young Van Morrison on vocals.

I expect the question is about the KC & The Sunshine Band one, though.
Don' Go by Hothouse Flowers (the video was played in the interval between contestants and the scoring in the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest)
KWS had a version as well.
