I'm about to start learning the guitar, and am looking for a decent instrument for a beginner to learn on.

How much is a reasonable amount to pay?

Looking for an acoustic guitar, not electric.

/that is possibly the worst advice i've ever seen/

which bit do you have problems with baz, the Spanish have been making guitars for some time, I believe some quite good guitarists play them. Eric Clapton bought 3 from the guy who made mine.
I think that the first move should be to measure finger length. I'm sure my short fingers never evolved to arch over strings that must not be touched yet press hard on the one that should.
I would advise for a beginner that you buy a thinner necked guitar rather the wider ones as per the traditional Spanish acoustic. Hope you enjoy learning, it's fun and an achievement when you learn to play an instrument, with or without reading music.
SP1814 please let me know how you get on with learning. My hubby also wants to learn.
O_G, finger length is an issue, I have quite short fingers(middle finger about 8cm) but there are as many ways of playing the guitar as there are guitarists.
At 8.5 you have given me new heart to try again. I think I can probably strum G.

SP, Decide what kind of guitar you want, decide on your maximum price, make a shortlist of guitars that meet those requirements then look for reviews via Google, of course ignoring reviews by people who are selling them. I would advise against visiting shops unless you want to try a specific model. Many guitar shops are manned by a coterie of guitar snobs who regard novices as easy meat and will either sell you whatever gives them most profit or ignore you as being unworthy of their attention. London may be better in this regard than Paris.

Why Fender? do you play country and western?
Try to make sure it's a solid top (as opposed to laminate) the sound will be much better.
£200 should get you something halfway decent.
