I know the answer to this (because a colleague just told me), but I thought I'd throw it out here...

In the sixties, the Beatles got to number one with a song that none of the band played any instruments on.

Without googling it up I would hazard a guess on it being Helena Rigby.

None of the Beatles played instruments on it, though John Lennon and George Harrison did contribute harmony vocals.[28] Like the earlier song "Yesterday", "Eleanor Rigby" employs a classical string ensemble—in this case an octet of studio musicians, comprising four violins, two violas, and two cellos, all performing a score composed by producer George Martin.

Yep!

That's the one. I've know that song for as long as I can remember, but never really thought about the fact that they don't play on it.

Apparently it was all George Martin's idea.
