Is it ever too late to learn how to play an instrument, can you be too old?

Definitely not.

What causes difficulties is having no patience or time to learn.

And for anyone who disagrees...

In the last year, I have taught a 73 year old friend with no musical background to play the entertainer on piano.

It is the simplified version, but still a task in itself. Both hands on Piano.

You're never too old. It won't get easier, but if you want to do it, you will!

yes if you are deaf and have arthritis in the fingers and unable to hold one for long periods and false teeth in some cases of brass instruements

Any time before you're dead is early enough to start.

I worked in a music prep centre, and although the majority of beginner classes were children, there were a fair number of adults across the board.

Never too old. Learning to play an instrument, and to read music, is excellent exercise for the ageing mind as well.

It's never too old. There is a group of woodwind muscians I know that are all over 40 and learning to play, saxophone, clarinet, flute etc. They call themselves Re-Cycled Wind. And they're not bad actually! If you fancy it, go for it!

No never! I learned to play classical guitar in my mid -thirties and went on to teach youngsters when I was hard up!
