Correct, beetles,- although I couldn't find a chequered beetle.
Some are moths/butterflies too so I wondered if tehre was something else. But I was waiting for the OP to join in

Thanks. I think chequered and checkered are interchangeable. I am pretty sure they are also moths and butterflies but I can't think of a band called Lepidoptera. I wonder if the Beetles/Beatles sounds like parsing is in keeping with other clues and answers- it would have helped to see some.
Anyway, mally you are right- unless teh setter was the one who did the 1294 clue in another quiz

Thanks Mark for your suggestion of the beetles I shall give it a try and let you know. I did reply the other day but must have pressed the wrong and thought it had gone. Some examples are german soldier with front runners as Gerry and the pacemakers also Manson, West, Sutcliffe as the killers if they would help
