Just heard on the news that Cream founder, Ginger Baker, has died at the age of 80. With his very colourful background, i'm surprised he reached that ripe old age. Excellent drummer and quite a character. R.I.P. Ginger.

Not being a fan of modern music I can say I am not really au fait with Ginger Baker and his traits.
Not sure my personal favourite Glenn Miller broke any ones noses though.
Different values I suppose.
His fame began in the sixties, hardly modern - unless you are a lot older than I thought.
His name was the first name that I knew as a drummer. Didn't know Glenn Miller was a drummer.

Tell me how old a drummer has to be in some music group when it becomes acceptable to break someones nose.Ok in the 50s, 70s ,90s?
Can I ask why you constantly question me about things I haven't said?

I was commenting on your remark that he was a modern pop idol of some sort.

To indulge you, I'll reply.

Never.

My Mum and Dad loved Glenn Miller and Dad took me to see dance bands.
Oh dear.

RIP Ginger.

There is definitely a lot of Ginger Baker in 'Animal' but also a fair sprinkling of Keith Moon.
Retro; why do you believe you have to indulge in this thread, only to snipe at the deceased? If you don't like the man, just ignore the thread.
Yes, Ken. An interesting mix that, Ginger and Keith Moon.
Eric Delaney was the first drummer I learnt about as a youngster and since then every one I have met has been crackers - it goes with the territory.

ps

Crackers does not necessarily mean violent ( to save any further interrogation )
it goes with the territory.

It does seem to, Mamya. Makes bands interesting though.

A heroin addict who died at 80.Better people than him, that I know, died much earlier who didn't abuse their body with illegal substances and didn't assault people either. No sniping.I am stating a fact.
He was 80 for christ's sake. How pathetic with your RIPs. I would guess a lot of you have no faith in a god in any case.

You do a lot of guessing don't you?
Gene Krupa for me:

Retro; You don't have to believe in fairy tales to hope someone rests in peace.
Krupa - excellent!
Didn't know about Gene Krupa ( although I have heard that music before.) Who's big band was he in ?
Saw Baker and Cream many times up at The Place in Hanley in the mid 60s. Great trio. Another sad death is that of Barrie Masters at 63 years old. Great front man for Eddie and the Hot Rods. Punk before punk was invented.

I interviewed Mr Baker for Drummer Magazine a few years ago, it was a phone interview, and he proved the most cantankerous and aggressive musician I have ever encountered.

I saw him play live to years ago in Montreal, and even though he was clearly in agony from arthritis, he still played like a demon.

A fabulous musician, and difficult person.
Sad ! He was one of the BEST !!!!
I remember that TV documentary about him a few years ago. He came over as a horrible man. His daughter Nettie's autiobiog is on my Christmas list - should be interesting.
