When I was little in the 1970's, there was a lead singer in a band who always wore a black and white hooped shirt, while the guitarist had a painted face like a clown. Can anyone tell me who they were? I remember the clown frightened me when he grinned!

Oooer Drusilla me too! I still get a bit scared when any kind of prog-rock from the seventies comes on either tv or radio. It's those synthesisers playing scary sounds, along with a multitude of creepy-faced rockers. As for the clown, ewwwww. Leo Sayer never bothered me when he dressed as one.
Old geezer here- I met Alex Harvey years ago the day after I'd seen him in concert. Nice guy but slightly mad! i asked him about his guitarist- Zal Cleminson - and the make up idea. He said it started as a joke but everyone liked it so much they stuck with it. The only problem was Zal had to spend ages getting his make up done while the rest of the band could nip to the pub! I told him clowns were meant to be funny, he told me they were born to scare young kids!
