There was a version of this song, not the usual operatic one, in a film ( I think from the late 30s) where a French nightclub sings it, without all the usual operatic fiddly bits, and it was marvellous!

We're racking our brains trying to recall the film, but so far no luck.

Any other recollections of Belle nuit, ô nuit d'amour, sung in a French night club?

Barcarolle?
The Barcarolle, as this piece is known, from Tales of Hoffman by Offenbach does feature in the 2011 movie 'Midnight in Paris'.

I haven't seen the film, but the protagonist travels back in time to the 1920s in Paris, so it seems a likely candidate for your memory.

No, not the Woody Allen version.

I’m sure the one I’m after is a black & white film made in the 30s. I’ll keep plugging away.

Thanks.
several 1930's films in this link appeared to have used the piece
