I have a very narrow taste in music - Soul and Funk only - so know very little of The Beatles music. I wasn't around at the time, so its pretty much passed my by, but a lot of the songs I do know, I haven't been massively impressed by (things like Help I found a bit meh).

However...

I heard The Long and Winding Road today for the first time and, oh my god, I think that's possibly the most beautiful song I've ever heard.

So, I'm going to broaden my horizons - any suggestions for Beatles gems?

Also the Rufus Wainwright cover of Across the Universe is excellent:

I adore Golden Slumbers Ellipsis, but to me it's somewhat incomplete without Carry The Weight and The End alongside it.

Deskdiary, to avoid confusion, they make up half of side 2 of Abbey Road, which has several songs combined as a medley. :-)
Personally, I never liked the segue of Golden Slumbers into Carry That Weight, but here you go - all three ...

I agree.
'Long and winding road' is very beautiful - it featured at our wedding. The Beatles changed over time. In many ways I like the freshness and honesty of their earlier numbers. As someone has said, I think, George wrote little - but very well. Just listen to the whole lot (missing Ringo's efforts if you are sensitive and some of the weirder Lennon 'Walrus' for example and 'Imaging') starting from scratch. Have fun. :)
The End: the only time Ringo got a drum solo, and he absolutely nails it.
Ha ha Mozz, took him long enough to contribute!
Jourdaine, being a pedant like I am, I got to add that George wrote tons when with the band, it was just that Paul and John's egos where such that they wouldn't give him more than a couple of slots per album. That's part of the reason that only a couple of months after the split, he had a double album ready to release (All Things Must Pass).

Such an underrated songwriter. (Yes, he's my favourite Beatle!)
Harsh! There was always With A Little Help From My Friends ;-)
The thing is, if you put out a large amount of art in any medium, then it's perfectly natural that some of it will hit the spot, and some of it will miss by a mile.

I would suggest, if you have the time, that you start at the end of the band's recorded output and work backwards, and see what takes your fancy.

Once released from the confines of having to play songs live on stage, they simply made the studio another instrument, and took off from there.
The Long and Winding Road ... In my Life ... Here Comes the Sun .... I could go on. Love it!
I saw The Beatles live at the London Palladium back in the day.
Hundreds of screaming girls! I've still got my Rubber Soul and Revolver albums up in the loft somewhere.
My favourite though was George Harrison. He went on to perform with The Traveling Wilburys along with the late great Tom Petty. He died far too young.
//He died far too young.//

So true. God, there are only two Wilburys left. :-(
My favourite Wilburys track
Mozz @ 21:49....yes!!!
