Marianne Faithful

This clip shows two things that most of have forgotten -
Marrianne Faithful really could sing, which is why she has made over twenty albums in her career.
And what a cosmically gorgeous looking woman she was - yes some people are actually born with lips like that - no Botox!!

I interviewed Ms Faithful a few years ago in Montreal, and she was great, very witty, and worldly, and still really attractive.
Then I saw her perform her show, and I honestly had no idea what to expect.
Firstly, you when she sang, you could very clearly see the beauty she was in her youth, and secondly, her concert was completey mesmerising.
She is so underrated as a vocalist and performer, I am so glad i got to see her, because her declining health means she may not be touring anymore.

pixie - // I'm not surprised, given your "firstly" and "secondly"... why the priorities went amiss :-) //
It's so sad that she doomed to be forever asociated with the 'Mars Bar Incident' from fifty-five (!!) years ago, which was invented by the New Of The World, and has plagued her ever since.
Unsurprisingly, it did not come up in our conversation!!

Naomi - // AH, how do you gain access to all these famous people you interview? //
In the case of Ms Faithful, she was appearing at the Montreal Jazz Festival, and I am an accredited media guest every year, they pay my accomodation and flights, and they have a press office that sorts out all the media requests, so that's all done for me.
Usually, I contact the press agent or management of an artist I want to talk to - usually because they have an album and / or a tour to promote, so they are available for interview.
The agent will arrange a mutually suitable time and place (pre-Covid anyway) and we meet up and have a conversation.
I am so looking forward to getting back to live music, and talking to artists face to face, there is no substitute for being in the room and having a proper conversation.
Obviously for the last year and the rest, I have been confined to telephone and Zoom chats, but they work fine, just not as good as the real thing.

pixie - // That's all I have ever associated her with, and Mick Jagger, tbh. //
Indeed.
Ms Faithful mentioned MJ in passing, before she sang Sister Morphine, she introduced it as "A song I wrote with someone called Mick Jagger, but we don't need to talk about him ..."
And I thought - how many people in the world could dismiss someone as famous as Mick Jagger like that? Not many!

pixie - // But, even now... you still think her beauty is more important than her talent... so you can kind of see why everything went how it did. I didn't even know she was a singer... //
I don't believe that I do actually Pix, and my OP points that out - I was careful to point out her singing ability first.
And that is what has lasted of course, beauty fades, talent simply grows with experience.

No- I think you were showing what happened x //
You're right, I did say that, but it was not my intention to either talk with her, or enjoy her concert, because of how beautiful she was in her youth.
Although I may have worded my point badly, that was not the order in which I thought of her, in person, or on stage.
Thinking back, I didn't conciously think of either aspect first or second, it was an entire experience, and one I am seriously glad to have had the opportunity to enjoy.

The Builder - // Everybody's pin-up in the 60s Andy.
She had a lean time in the 70s. Usual story... drink/drugs etc.
I remember buying her comeback album in '79. "Broken English"
"The Ballad of Lucy Jordan" still gets to me ;o) //
I entirely agree - her strength of character, to come back from near death and serious addiction, to create a meaningful artistic career, takes some doing, and as i said, I think she is under-appreciated for it.
