as mentioned on ITV's news earlier, today would have been David Bowie's 75th birthday, and 2 days short of the 6th anniversary of his passing. like him or not, his influence has been cast wide, not just amongst those for whom he was patron (Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, etc) but also the likes of Bauhaus, The Smiths, Joy Division and Yungblud.

a livestream event is being held today, organised by long-term Bowie band member Mike Garson. if you don't have time (or funds) for that and you feel his birthday should be marked (you may not, and that's fine....) then post your favorite track, or one that you think was notable for whatever reason.

to start - maybe not classic Bowie but a notable track, because on one level it's a funky tune, but on another level (typical Bowie) it's very much darker.

over to you.....

Really nice man. As far away from my style as anyone could be (apart from Hitler perhaps) but very warm and kind.
Sadly, Pixie, I wasn't fond of David's work at all. I knew it was successful, I knew he could sing (Brel songs at Beckenham Arts Lab, and I remember too his first public play there of Major Tom, complete with acoustic guitar, recorded backing track and live Stylophone) and I knew he was handsome and charismatic (curly bubble hair then, and an eyepatch for his conjunctivitis), but none of that endeared him to me, naturally.
Lovely guy.
One of the few I cried over when he died. Didn't know him, but he really did seem to be a lovely person. I actually think he was a genius.

I'm not, particularly, atheist.... not really my type. But- can't complain about a bit of a rock thread....
Not the best singer, but his songs all had a different character.

I'm not complaining, Pixie. I didn't like most of my contemporaries in those days, especially the successful ones. But I certainly liked and respected the nice ones. (David B, Joe Brown, Tin Lizzie...er, all the rest were hassoles! (especially 10cc).
lol.
I'm a huge fan and was fortunate enough to see him live. However, I don't think I'd describe him as anyone's "patron", especially not Lou Reed whose first (Velvet Underground) album was released before Bowie's first album.
Loved one of 10cc's... can't remember which. Bowie, I think, was very talented, but not actually someone I particularly enjoyed, myself.
Can someone please post a link to Absolute Beginners for me.
I did, pat. My first?
I like this pic. Think it was on Ansett. Apparently, he was scared of flying and usually travelled by private jet. https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/unseen-david-bowie-down-under-on-world-tour-1983-20171210-h020e2.html
