In his brief career, Cobain took Nirvana to the pinacle of pop chart success, without ever compromising his musical or personal ideals. A history of mental and drug problems meant that he never really enjoyed success and fame, or the pressures they brought. He is survived by his widow, Courtney Love, actress and leader of the band Hole, and a daughter, Frances Bean Cobain.
The remaining members of the band have moved on - bassist Krist Noveselic formed the band Sweet 75, and drummer Dave Grohl has switched to guitar, with considerable success as leader of The Foo Fighters.
The two musicians planned to release a posthumous live album in 1994, but sorting through the tapes proved too painful, and the record company put out 'MTV Unplugged In New York' instead. The band's final album is a live electric set, 'From The Banks Of The Muddy Wishkah' which was released in 1996. It provides a fitting epitaph to one of the most influential bands of the last twenty years
